It was a Wednesday, I was standing in the tea isle looking at a Rishi tea I’d not seen before, it was lavender mint. Then it happened… music started playing over the store speakers, it was the song Mysterious Ways by U2. There’s a line “if you want to kiss the sky you better learn how to kneel, on your knees boy” and right then the tears started rolling down my face.
You see, it was 1992. I was at a bar with friends and at that exact moment, someone knocked into me at just the right angle to dislocate my right kneecap. I literally fell to the ground during the line “on your knees boy. SHE’S the wave, she turns the tide” and I will never ever forget it.
As I heard the song in Whole Foods I remembered how tender that version of me was. She was only in her 20’s, she liked boys who weren’t men yet, she was naive, she loved dressing in ruffle shirts and she stenciled James Dean’s face on the thigh of her blue jeans. She loved her friends and her independence but she had no idea what was ahead…
She would endure heartbreak, the loss of her father only a few short years later. She would travel and become so ill that it was nearly fatal, then she’d experience extreme vertigo for 8 months that would change the trajectory of her entire life… She would have to reinvent herself and her life.
